What's a Nuclear Medicine Scan?
It is a scan that employs small amounts of radiation to create pictures of tissues, bones, and organs inside the body. Whether it is to check the functioning of your liver, bones or heart, the procedure of nuclear medicine scanning has backed you up.
Digging deeper to fathom the test; a small dose of radiopharmaceutical is injected. There is a waiting period of approx. 1.5 to 2.5 hours between the time of injection and the time of the scan. This duration may vary from test to test.
By which other names is the test known?
You might have seen a doctor using other names for a nuclear medicine scan such as:

How does Nuclear Medicine function?
Nuclear scans wield a special camera meant to detect radiation. In most scenarios, you will be asked to lie down on a scanning table and the camera will perform its duty to take the pictures.
It is important to highlight that most scans do not take more than an hour or so. But from the injection to the accomplishment of the complete test, you may be asked to wait for several hours.
Furthermore, these scans are performed at a nuclear medicine or radiology department under the guidance of specialists with relevant years of experience in the field. The professional carrying out the entire operation will try to comfort you as much as possible.
Also, you will be asked to remove all jewelry and metal that could play a possible deterrent with the images. Thus, it is better to leave them in your household only. You may also be asked to wear a gown before the test.
